According to Nikita Panin, an expert at the African Research Center of the National Research University School of Economics, it is unlikely that BRICS will be filled with new members from Africa. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
“It is unlikely that BRICS will expand to include new African countries, although Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, has recently expressed its interest in BRICS, although before that it had preferred to distance itself somewhat from this format,” the expert noted in an interview with the press.
Panin also stressed that the current BRICS structure needs to “settle down”: agree on expectations, develop mechanisms for interaction and demonstrate that expansion not only increases the number of participants but also brings practical value, fosters synergy and cooperation. Only then, he added, will it be possible to discuss the possibility of the next wave of BRICS expansion.
