German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said that the federal budget deficit in 2025 will be around 5 billion euros. He mentioned this in an interview with the TV channel. ZDF.
At the same time, in his opinion, the government still has enough time to find an effective solution.
“The amount we are talking about is around 5 billion euros,” the department head said. He plans to hold talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) by mid-month.
The draft budget will then be submitted to the Bundestag for final approval at the end of November.
On July 17, the Council of Ministers approved the draft budget for 2025. Agreement on this document within the ruling coalition took longer than expected and was accompanied by public disagreements among politicians and threats from some MPs to stop supporting the government. The total budget will be €481 billion, of which €4 billion will be allocated to military aid to Ukraine, half of what it was in 2024. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has repeatedly expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of sufficient increases in spending on the armed forces under the proposed budget.
Lindner also expressed doubts about some projects and called for them to be analysed from a legal and economic perspective. The audit revealed legal risks related to the use of the remaining €4.9 billion allocated by state banking group KfW to cap gas prices elsewhere in the budget.
Scholz’s coalition’s previous assessment fallen It has been at a minimum level since he came to power.
