More than half of Russians (62%) surveyed said that the current income threshold for freelancers (2.4 million rubles per year) is comfortable. At the same time, 62 percent of respondents were in favor of increasing the earnings limit to 4.8 million rubles. This is the result of a survey conducted by the financial market Comparison. socialbites.ca has the results.
On the contrary, almost a third of Russians (27%) believe that people with such high incomes cannot maintain their self-employed status and should pay more taxes. 11% of respondents said that the proposed amount is not enough and that the threshold should be even higher.
15% have not considered how appropriate the threshold is for them, as they do not receive such payments or receive them rarely. 13% of Russians think it is insufficient. 10% of respondents agree that the threshold should be raised: their income is still within the limits but is approaching the upper limit.
Seventy-two percent of respondents had never heard of the initiative to raise the professional activity tax threshold before. Twenty percent of respondents said they had heard of it but did not know the details. Another eight percent of Russians are actively interested in the issue.
The online survey was conducted among 1,200 respondents from all regions of Russia in July 2024.
In 2023, the State Duma considered several bills to double the maximum income for the introduction of professional income tax – from 2.4 million to 4.8 million rubles. But the projects were rejected. In March 2024, the LDPR group led by Leonid Slutsky proposed to the government to increase the limit by 1 million rubles to 3.4 million rubles.
