Dozens of tankers involved in the Russian oil trade have been idled for months after US Treasury sanctions, which could indicate the scale of a possible supply disruption. writes about this Bloomberg.
Since October, 40 ships have been included in the sanctions list for violating Russia’s oil price ceiling. Only one, SKF Primorye, could be loaded after the sanctions; he is also going to Asia. If the unloading goes smoothly, Russia can put the remaining ships into operation.
It is criticized that sanctions are unnecessary since Russia’s exports are still high. But the fleet’s downtime demonstrates the effectiveness of measures taken against individual ships. 21 of the 40 tankers belong to Sovcomflot and 19 belong to UAE-based Hennesea.
In April, a Turkish tanker that was allowed to load in the USA was removed from the list. The rest remain dormant worldwide, according to the agency’s tracking data.
8 Sovcomflot tankers are stationed near Vladivostok and Nakhodka, some for 5 months. The 7th gathered in the Black Sea, arrived in December – February and turned off the transponders. The other 3 ships are in the Baltic.
18 Hennesea tankers have been idle since January: 10 are off the coast of China and Korea, and some are in repair yards. The rest is outside Port Said, some of them have been there since March. These ships were flagged by airport tracking systems due to signal spoofing.
