The Ukrainian sugar producers’ association “Ukrtsukor” (“Ukrsakhar”) appealed to the country’s authorities with a request to stop the export of the product to the European Union (EU). This was reported by Reuters.
Ukraine has already exported to the EU the amount of sugar allowed under European bloc quotas in 2024, the agency reported, citing a statement by the association. In this context, Ukrtsukor asked the country’s government to officially suspend further supplies of products to EU countries.
The Union believes that such actions will confirm the “constructive position” of Ukrainian producers in the context of integration into the EU sugar market and calls on the country’s authorities to take the initiative and close the border to exports “as soon as possible”.
13 May European Union for one year elongated Suspension of import tariffs and quotas on Ukrainian goods.
In early May, Reuters cited Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Agricultural Policy and Food Taras Vysotsky. reportedIt is stated that Ukraine will be able to use its sugar supply quota to Europe in the near future.
According to a Ukrainian official, in 2024 Ukraine will be able to process approximately 1.8 million tons of sugar; However, only 262 thousand tons of this volume is allowed to be exported to Europe. The Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food of Ukraine assumes that it can find buyers for Ukrainian sugar in West Africa and the Middle East.
