State Duma Deputy Sergei Leonov and Chairman of the All-Russian Union of Passengers (OOP), Deputy Chairman of the Public Council of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation Ilya Zotov, sent letters to the ministry with a proposal to prohibit airlines from automatically canceling passengers’ return tickets. The newspaper reports this “News”.
According to the publication, deputies and social activists appealed to the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Vitaly Savelyev with this initiative. According to the newspaper, passengers who purchased a round-trip ticket within the same reservation and are late for the first flight will not be able to benefit from the return flight. According to Deputy Leonov, many people are forced to buy new tickets.
“Airlines should be prohibited from automatically canceling return flights for passengers who miss their first flight. First you need to clarify whether the person plans to use the remaining tickets from the booking. Only in case of refusal should travel documents be canceled,” Leonov explained.
In addition, the authors of the legislative initiative noted that some passengers were not aware of the cancellation, which led to unpleasant situations.
As a result, passengers filed a complaint with the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, but the ministry stated that carriers have the right to cancel reservations on any section of the route in accordance with federal rules, but this is allowed only if the passenger does not give the necessary permission. He stated that he wanted to continue his journey on the remaining route.
As the publication writes, a passenger who missed a flight has the right to keep his return ticket: for this it is necessary to inform the carrier, but many people are not aware of this procedure due to the lack of instructions when purchasing. added the PLO chairman. However, federal regulations do not specify the period within which a passenger must indicate intent to use other tickets from the same reservation after missing the first flight.
Therefore, Zotov proposes adding to federal rules a specific period within which passengers must notify their desire to keep their return tickets and obliging airlines to inform citizens about the cancellation process.
