Russia is among the top 10 countries in terms of total computing power, and the overall level of application of artificial intelligence in priority areas of the economy was 31.5%. This was stated by the Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov at the plenary session of the industry AI Day at the Russian exhibition “Artificial Intelligence – The Main Technology of the 21st Century”.

In particular, Reshetnikov noted that staff shortages, competition for them and increasing wages are some of the main challenges in the economy in the near future. Artificial intelligence helps solve these problems that can affect workforce productivity by optimizing processes, reducing costs and improving product quality. To develop the artificial intelligence industry as a whole, the Russian government has prepared a national strategy for the development of artificial intelligence until 2030.

“The important thing now is to continue the trend towards application, ensuring mass use and replication of the technology across industries. Because of its size, this is the duty of the entire government. Reshetnikov emphasized that system-wide measures to remove regulatory restrictions, use experimental legal regimes and create a talent pool will help promote work with artificial intelligence among businesses using the technology.

According to him, the necessary incentives should be created for those who have not yet implemented artificial intelligence and a solution market should be developed for them. The minister believes that it is also important to develop basic science: computational methods for neural networks, new methods of model building, optimization of calculations.

“We will create science schools, allocate additional funds and open new research centers, attract the business world to this, increase computing power, thus providing employment opportunities for the best experts of the future,” the minister emphasized.

In line with the national AI development strategy, the introduction of AI by 2030 will increase Russia’s GDP by 11.2 trillion rubles, and business and government investments in AI will increase from 120 to 850 billion rubles per year. At the same time, up to 95% of priority sectors will actively implement artificial intelligence.
