The cost of insuring ships laying undersea communications cables near Yemen has risen sharply amid tensions in the Red Sea linked to Houthi attacks. This was reported by Wall StreetJournal (WSJ).

“The low speed of cable ships makes laying new lines in disputed waters dangerous and expensive,” the publication notes. According to the WSJ, the cost of insurance is reaching $150,000 per day, which is much higher than previous estimates.

To reduce potential risks, companies laying cables in the region are seeking permission to operate from both sides of the conflict – Yemen’s internationally recognized government and Houthi rebels, WSJ reported.

On February 27, as a result of another attack by the Houthis from the Ansarullah movement, damaged four submarine communication cables. This caused severe disruptions in internet communications between Europe and Asia; Gulf countries and India were hit the hardest.
