Mead states a 0.3% decline in Germany’s GDP in 2023. Industrial production has been declining for 8 months in a row. Large companies, including BASF, announce that they will make cost cuts in Germany due to high energy prices.

“Flawed energy policies have led to structurally higher energy prices,” writes a WSJ columnist.

The expert reminded that Germany abandoned Donald Trump’s plans to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2.

According to the newspaper, the author also criticizes Germany’s insufficient defense expenditures. Germany’s Defense Minister recently admitted that the country may need to spend 3.5 percent of GDP on the military instead of the promised 2 percent.

The American journalist summarizes that the intra-coalition contradictions of the Scholz government worsened the economic crisis. He predicts that the popularity of the opposition right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Germany will increase.
