Sales of beer in plastic bottles will continue to decline in 2024 and it is possible that alternative packaging types will emerge. This forecast was given to socialbites.ca by Pavel Shapkin, Chairman of the National Union for the Protection of Consumer Rights, Head of the National Center for Development of Alcohol Policy, who finally commented on the decline in sales of beer in pet cups. 2023.

“The main contribution to limiting the use of PET beverage containers will be made by consumers. The only convenience of PET containers compared to other types of consumer packaging is the screw cap. If glass bottle manufacturers switched to screw caps for beer bottles, they could gain another ten percent of the PET market. It is not entirely clear how this could be implemented in aluminum, but the share of identical cans will continue to grow and replace PET,” commented Shapkin.

The expert predicts that the share of beer sales in cans will increase by about 6% by the end of 2024 due to the replacement of PET. He said sales of plastic-packaged beer are falling in 2023 due to the growing popularity of the lightweight, consumer-friendly aluminum can alternative, as well as younger generations’ interest in sustainability and environmental awareness.

“The government has also recently drawn attention to issues of limiting the impact of plastic on the environment, including the microplastic problem. Many countries are actively fighting against the use of plastic in food products and packaging. In Kenya, for example, you can face real prison time for using plastic bags. “Unfortunately, using it without counting is a common practice in our country. It is true that increased eco-collection coefficients have been implemented for plastic packaging manufacturers as of January 1,” said the expert.

Kommersant newspaper, citing the NielsenIQ retail audit, wrote that sales of beer in plastic bottles in Russia decreased by 4.8% in volume and 1% in currency terms in 2023, while a year ago, on the contrary, there was an increase. Thus, pet-packaged beer sales increased by 2.5% and 18.3%, respectively, in 2022.

Previously Şapkin said “socialbites.ca” says that due to rising vodka prices, Russians will begin to switch to beer.
