On Monday, the Russian Federation begins an experiment in labeling certain types of canned foods. According to a decree previously signed by the Russian government, the experiment will be carried out until August 31, 2024, it says Interfax.

Within the scope of the pilot regime, canned meat and fish, canned vegetables, fruits, nuts, mushrooms, seafood, as well as marmalade, fruit purees and jellies will be labeled as specified in the decision.

The test will not apply to canned baby food products intended for children under 1 year of age.

Participation in the experiment is voluntary and label codes will be provided free of charge to producers and other participants in the product circulation.

LLC “Operator CRPT” acts as the operator of the experiment. According to Yulia Kuzmina, head of the CRPT’s department of non-consumable food products, the basis of the experiment was the “expanded illegal canned food market”. CRPT noted that according to data from the Research Institute of the Ministry of Finance, the share of illegal trade in the canned food market varies between 11% and 40%, depending on the product.
