Austria imported almost twice as much gas as its economy needed in 2023. This was reported by Bloomberg.
Russian gas giant Gazprom has delivered all gas volumes specified in the long-term contract until 2040 in 2023, according to Austrian company OMV. The agency writes that in the fourth quarter of last year, the company purchased 5.3 TWh of fuel per month.
This allowed Austria to send more abroad than it imported for the first time since 2003, according to E-Control.
At the same time, electricity consumption in the country fell by 5.3%. At the same time, low-cost hydropower generation increased by more than a fifth compared to the previous year.
