Scientists Svetlana Mareeva and Ekaterina Slobodenyuk from the Stratification Research Center of the Institute of Social Policy of the Higher School of Economics of the National Research University discovered what characteristics unite the Russian billionaires on the Forbes list. This was reported by RBC.

The authors of the study compiled a portrait of the richest people in Russia: men with higher education in Moscow, from a good family, who made their fortune in the fuel and energy complex, finance or industry. Most often, the parents of such people worked in the fields of science, education, culture, as well as in the fields of industry or the fuel and energy complex. At the same time, wealthy Russians often preferred foreign education for their own children.

The study is based on analysis of information on Russian businessmen who were included in the Russian Forbes list at least once in the period from 2004 to 2021 – a total of 379 people.

Scientists also named established trends among the richest Russians: inequality in the level of wealth even within this narrow group and slow change of group representatives. According to the 2023 Forbes lists, income inequality among the ultra-rich continues: Among the $110 billionaires, only 14 people have a fortune of more than $10 billion, while half have a fortune of less than $2.5 billion.

Forbes’ lists are dominated by men, but in recent years the billionaires rankings have increasingly included women, with seven women in 2021. Nine women were included in the lists for the entire period, and one of them, Elena Baturina, has been in the ranking since 2004.
