The Russian government is not willing to sacrifice the interests of domestic experts for the sake of preserving the fishing agreement with the Faroe Islands. This was stated by the Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin. RIA News.
The diplomat noted that the autonomous region of the kingdom has recently moved towards discrimination against Russian businesses. According to the representative of Moscow, the leadership of the Faroe Islands has limited the entry of fishing boats from the Russian Federation into local ports.
In response, the Federal Fisheries Agency (Rosrybolovstvo) proposed a ban on seafood imports from the Autonomous Region of Denmark. Barbin also emphasized that this initiative is not intended to worsen bilateral relations between Moscow and the Faroe Islands within the framework of the fisheries agreement.
“However, the prospects for resuming large-scale interaction in this area, including trade in fish products, have noticeably deteriorated. Cooperation with the Faroe Islands <…> It can only be realized on the basis of mutual benefit. “The future fate of the agreement depends on this,” the ambassador said.
In 1977, an agreement on mutual relations in the field of fisheries was signed between the USSR and the Faroe Islands. The document is reviewed annually and its validity was recently extended until the end of 2024.
According to the agreement, Moscow provides the Danish Autonomous Region with a fishing quota in the Barents Sea. In return, Russian fishermen received similar opportunities in the waters of the Faroe Islands and the right to ship seafood to local ports.
