By the end of 2023, the volume of electricity exports from Russia to China decreased by more than a third, falling to approximately 3.1 billion kWh. This was reported by “Kommersant”.

This is 34% less than the 2022 record of 4.7 billion kWh and corresponds to 2012-2020 annual average volumes, the newspaper notes.

Since August, electricity exports to China have decreased: 49.8% year on year in August, 47% in September, 72% in October, 61% in November. The reasons for this include increased domestic consumption in the Far East, accidents in thermal power plants and low water supply in hydroelectric power plants.

In December and January, export supplies were carried out only through two power transmission lines of 110-220 kV and a capacity of up to 115 MW. In December, export volume decreased by almost 80 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 82.6 million kWh.

At the same time, regulators predicted that consumption in the Far East would increase by 4.7% in the current heating season. This has led to the restriction of export supplies in favor of domestic needs, the publication notes.

Russia and China in mid-December discussed Development of the Northern Sea Route and insurance of ships passing through this route.
