In the first quarter, steam coal deliveries from Russia to India increased by 2.7 thousand times year on year to 573.2 thousand tons. At the same time, Russian thermal coal deliveries to India totaled 1.3 million tons in the whole last year.

Increasing coal deliveries to India is taking place against the backdrop of a severe energy crisis in the country. This happened because India sharply reduced its coal imports into the country last year due to the sharp rise in its prices. As a result, fuel reserves fell to a critical level.

Experts agreed that Russia is interested in new coal markets after Europe rejected the supply. About 63 million tons of the 172 million tons of steam coal exports from Russia are subject to redirection. In addition, Russia now offers discounts of up to 50% compared to world prices. However, if coal prices fall from $155 per ton to $105 per ton, the profitability of exports may be in question.
