A new record was broken in cargo transportation in the modern history of Russia by transporting 35 million tons of cargo on the Northern Sea Route in 2023. This has been reported Online state company “Rosatom”.
It is stated that a preliminary summary of this year’s results was made at the FSUE Atomflot facility in Murmansk. The previous record was recorded in 2021. The value of this indicator at that time was 34.9 million tons.
“Today, the 35 millionth ton was transported literally overnight, we plan to transport 100 thousand tons every day by the end of the year. As a result, we target 36 million tons. The record for shipping along the NSR in the Soviet Union in 1987 was 7 million tons. Today, a new historical record was set in Russia at night, the 35 millionth tonne was transported,” said Vladimir Panov, Rosatom’s special representative for Arctic development.
According to him, although there was a significant increase in the transportation of Russian companies last year, the decrease in transit cargo traffic exceeded 90 percent due to geopolitical factors. 34.117 million tons were transported in 2022.
“This year a new record has already been set – a completely renewed record in the transit cargo flow: 2 million 127 thousand tons were transported. This cargo was diverted through the Suez Canal to the Northern Sea Route. “This record was made possible thanks to the work of thousands of people working in companies in the Arctic,” he added.
Panov emphasized that the Northern Sea Route was determined by Russian President Vladimir Putin as one of the strategic development priorities.
As Rosatom notes, cargo traffic on the Northern Sea Route is showing steady growth. At the same time, the state company is doing a lot of work to create attractive working conditions in the Arctic.
FSUE Atomflot General Manager Adviser Andrei Tenitsky said that today 34 percent of Rosatomflot employees are under 35 years old.
“The Arctic is interesting for young men and women. Young people enjoy working on new universal nuclear icebreakers: modern household equipment, unique technologies and reliability. “But there is also a visible career progression on these ships,” he added.
Rosatom believes that the new registrations of the Northern Sea Route show the promise of creating a single logistics area for the country.
