Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov said Hungarian officials have warned his country of a veto on joining Schengen if Sofia does not cancel the increased tax on the passage of Russian gas through its territory. His words were quoted on a European news site Euroactive.
“Hungary has sent a low-level official message that they will veto Schengen if we don’t abolish the gas fee,” the Prime Minister said.
According to the publication, a decision on Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen zone may be made soon, in connection with which Sofia is considering repealing the law on increasing the transit tariff for gas from the Russian Federation.

In his assessment, such actions by Bulgaria are a “scandalous and hostile step” that threatens gas transit to three countries at once (North Macedonia, Serbia and Hungary).
