Technical experts are working with representatives of state-owned oil and gas companies to identify sources of methane emissions and prepare a joint plan to eliminate associated gas leaks, according to the agency. On Friday, Turkmen officials announced their intention to join the Global Methane Commitment (GMP) led by the United States and Europe. More than 150 countries are participating and aim to reduce global emissions by a third compared to 2020 levels by the end of this decade.
Negotiations between the USA and Turkmenistan regarding methane gas started at the beginning of this year. According to data from the International Energy Agency and the World Bank, approximately 7 percent of the natural gas obtained from oil production in Turkmenistan is wasted. Eliminating methane leaks is equivalent to eliminating approximately 92 million tonnes of CO2 per year.
During oil production, associated gas is produced, which is a byproduct. It consists of a mixture of methane, butane, propane, ethane and isobutane. Byproduct gas is a valuable resource but is frequently flared.
