Thus, Alexander Novikov, president of the Sturgeon Breeders Association, which owns the Russian Caviar House company, said that the share of illegal Chinese black caviar in the Russian market is now about 40%. Especially in 2022, 18.5 tons of black caviar was imported from China to Russia only through official means, but Chinese products were sold as Russian.
According to Novikov, in addition to official supplies, illegal Chinese games are also imported into Russia, the volume of which is 1.5-2 times the legal one.
The expert noted that Chinese caviar differs from domestic caviar in worse quality. GMO ingredients are widely used when breeding sturgeon, especially in China.
Oleg Pavlov, Deputy Chairman of the Public Council of Rospotrebnadzor and head of the “Public Consumer Initiative”, emphasized that the huge difference in price encourages unscrupulous businessmen to buy cheap Chinese caviar and then sell it to domestic consumers under the guise of Russian, making huge profits. .
Pavlov noted that the state currently does not have the means to effectively control the production and sale of black caviar. Buyers also cannot distinguish Russian products from cheap Chinese products by external signs.
