More than 120 British companies admitted violating sanctions against the Russian Federation

From February 2022 to May 2023, more than 100 companies reported to the British government that they had violated anti-Russian restrictions. The newspaper reports this Finance Times.

The publication stated that in 127 cases, legal entities voluntarily reported sanctions violations to the competent authorities. The companies agreed to cooperate with the investigation to reduce penalties.

Citing a source close to the British Treasury, the newspaper noted that the ministry does not plan to “excessively punish” for unintentional mistakes. Among the reasons for violations of restrictions, the publication also cites the opaque ownership structure of companies linked to the Russian Federation with which British traders do business.

The introduction of sanctions against Russia has become a test for UK business, according to Stacey Keane, partner at law firm Pinsent Masons.
