After the news about the modernization of 5 thousand ruble banknotes appeared, residents of Moscow and the Moscow region began to receive calls from scammers urging to urgently replace old banknotes with new ones. Alexey Potekhin, Deputy Head of the Information Protection Department of the Main Directorate of the Central Federal District of the Bank of Russia, told socialbites.ca.
“The claim is that the five per thousand coins we are used to will no longer be used every day, we need to hurry! Scammers pose as Central Bank or social service workers. Scammers politely offer to prepare all their savings at a pre-agreed time when a person can transfer them for exchange,” explained Potekhin.
Then the scammers take the prepared savings in exchange for a receipt and promise to check everything and bring “new banknotes” later. The person loses both old and new money. If attackers “change” money during the meeting, the person receives counterfeit money.
“In reality, there is no forced exchange and there never will be! Moreover, the updated banknotes with a nominal value of 5 thousand rubles will not be put into circulation in the near future. Adapting equipment to accept and print banknotes takes time; However, if configured, banknotes will appear in circulation. But even from now on, these will be used for payments at the same level as the 1997 model banknotes we know,” Potekhin said.
He explained that the replacement of some banknotes with others will naturally occur due to the wear and tear of old banknotes. This will take more than a year, the expert added.
The Bank of Russia reminded that to reliably determine the authenticity of banknotes, at least three security features must be checked. They can be identified by light, touch and by changing the angle of view.
For example, on the new $5,000 bill, the watermark is visible in light. It is located in a light-coloured area on the right side of the banknote, with smooth transitions from light to dark areas, and features a high-lit image of the Main Post Office building and a high-lit number “5000” with a contrasting dark colour. piece.
When you tilt the banknotes, you can see an element that changes color, namely the hidden numbers. On the front side, in a flat area with the text “RUSSIA”, hidden denomination numbers, each digit in a different color, can be seen when looking at the surface of the banknote from a narrow angle. When the banknote is rotated 180° without changing the viewing angle, the color of each digit changes.
By touch, you can identify the inscriptions “BANK OF RUSSIA TICKET”, “FIVE THOUSAND RUBLES”, a digital designation of the denomination and increasing embossed strokes along the edges of the banknote.
