The Russian Orthodox Church is unhappy about the absence of a temple on the 1,000-ruble note depicting the temple building of the Kazan Kremlin – there is not actually a cross on top of the building as it is currently used as a museum, reports RIA News citing a source in the Moscow Patriarchate.

Discontent was caused by the State Historical Museum of the Tatar People and the Republic of Tatarstan in Kazan, located in the building of the former palace church. The Russian Orthodox Church is not happy that artists decided to use the image of the current era, although it admits that it is difficult to blame the artists for this.

“In this case (with the banknotes), the question is why they chose this particular image, which in our opinion does not reflect the interfaith character of Kazan. We know that there are many mosques and Orthodox churches in Kazan. “It is strange that there is no place for an Orthodox church with a cross in the painting dedicated to Kazan,” the message reads.

The source said the Church hopes that all buildings originally used for religious purposes will be returned to their “status and purpose”.
