Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov commented on the decision to impose a tax of 20 leva (about €10) per megawatt hour (MWh) for the transit of Russian gas through the country. This was reported by TASS.

According to him, Hungary and Serbia received permission to import Russian gas despite sanctions measures against Moscow.

Denkov emphasized that there are interconnections that provide alternatives today, so Russian gas should not take advantage of this opportunity.

He emphasized that the introduced tax creates a real competitive opportunity between liquefied natural gas coming from various sources and gas coming from Russia.

Before that Bulgaria introduced The tax on the transit flow of Russian gas through its territory has caused a new wave of instability in the already problematic European gas market.

The purpose of the law is to enforce EU sanctions against Russia and increase Bulgaria’s budget revenues. However, Hungary had already criticized this decision as unacceptable and contrary to European solidarity.
