Russia has begun the development of a draft new interstate standard for beer. The document tightens requirements on malt content and limits the use of products containing sugar. This was reported by “Kommersant” Referring to the Union of Russian Brewers (USB).

It is recommended to limit the replacement of beer malt to 20% and the share of sugar to 2%. Beer identification based on nitrogen and other substances is also being introduced. According to PSA, this will not allow the malt substitution rate to be increased to 50% as allowed in the EAEU.

Major manufacturers oppose the project. APP believes the restrictions conflict with consumer demand and harm business. Manufacturers claim that sugar is necessary for the beer variety, but the stated descriptors have not been proven.

Independent expert Alexey Nebolsin believes that the new standards will increase costs. Beer prices will continue to rise due to inflation. Minimum retail sales may be introduced, which will kill the cheapest brands.
