Hungarian Foreign and Foreign Economic Relations Minister Péter Szijjarto said that the volume of gas entering his country from Russia via Ukraine could be diverted to the Turkish Stream if the transit stops after 2024. He said this at a press conference posted on Facebook (the owner of the Meta company was considered an extremist and banned in Russia).
“Hungary took timely measures so that its diversification efforts concern not only resources, but also routes … After all, why are routes needed if there are no resources, and why are resources needed if there are no routes? Gas supplies need both,” said Szijjártó.
According to the diplomat, it is very important to have a Turkish Stream natural gas pipeline with a carrying capacity of 8.5 billion cubic meters to Hungary. Szijjarto noted that under a long-term contract he could fully include the entire volume of gas coming from Russia to Hungary.
August 16 Head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko declarationHe said his country would not negotiate with Russia on the extension of the gas contract to Europe.
On April 25, the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed banning the direct supply of Russian gas to the European Union, bypassing the territory of Ukraine. Later, it was noted that this measure aimed to stop the use of Turkish Stream for the supply of Russian gas to Europe.
The transit contract between Moscow and Kiev is valid until 31 December 2024.
