Federal Penitentiary Service says business is interested in prisoner labor

The Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) reported that businesses were interested in using the labor of prisoners and included 99% of those sentenced to forced labor, “vedomosti“.

According to the service, currently, a total of 35.3 thousand prisoners, 9,300 people work in private companies, and the remaining 26,000 people work for forced labor in 1,700 organizations, serving in the labor service. It is reported that at the beginning of 2023, more than 300 correctional facilities, where 40 thousand prisoners can be employed, have been established, and the number of places where punishments in the form of forced labor are planned to be increased to 80 thousand by 2024.

According to the Federal Penitentiary Service, the use of prison labor is becoming “an effective way to make up for the shortage of labor resources.”

From October 1, 2023, individual entrepreneurs will be able to attract prisoners to work. Now, correctional centers in the form of dormitories can be established in enterprises.
