The Lebanese Banks Association (ALB) has announced that it has temporarily suspended its services to its clients due to a new wave of attacks from disgruntled depositors. In order to ensure the safety of employees and prevent property damage, banking institutions will remain closed indefinitely from Friday, July 21, ALB said on Twitter. writes about it TASS.

On July 18, an unidentified person broke into a branch of Credit Libanais bank in Shkhim city with a grenade and demanded the return of $35,000 from a frozen account that had been blocked three years ago due to the financial crisis. Having received part of the amount that he had to pay for the treatment, the criminal surrendered to the guards. Similar events occurred on 19 and 20 July in Antellas, Beirut and Bint Jbeil. On Wednesday, the ALB requested the authorities to protect the bank offices from attacks, but the government failed to take appropriate measures.

In another incident in Sin el Fil on Thursday, two attackers broke into a branch of Byblos Bank and threatened to set the building on fire unless they were given a $23,000 deposit, so the ALB decided to temporarily suspend the work of the banking institutions.

Last year, Lebanese banks suspended customer service twice, and warning strikes were held in September and October to protest attempts to seize bank offices.

The ALB management also expressed dissatisfaction with the authorities’ intention to audit 14 major banks in line with the International Monetary Fund’s recommendations regarding charges of illegal withdrawals from abroad.
