European industrialists urged not to impose sanctions on Rusal

The European Aluminum Association urged the European Union not to impose sanctions on Rusal, Russia’s largest aluminum producer. In this respect writer Reuters referred to a memorandum sent to members of the association.

It is dated July 2023. The document concludes that “The wide spread of Rusal’s activities around the world makes the sanctions against this company more problematic and should therefore be avoided.”

The Memorandum states that Rusal produced 4 million tons of primary aluminum last year, accounting for about 6% of its entire supply in the world.

The European Commission and Rusal declined to comment.

European industrialists do not support restrictions on the largest producer, but favor sanctions on the Russian aluminum industry as a whole.

The document states that the industry supports any effort by the US government and its allies to address the ongoing crisis.

In March, the US imposed a 200% tax on metal imports to the country. May England introduced Embargo on Russian aluminum supply.
