Imported pharmaceutical prices started to rise again after falling in 2022 “Kommersant”.
According to the agency, the price of some positions of imported pharmaceuticals in January-May increased by 40-100% compared to the same period last year.
The reasons for this increase in price are the depreciation of the ruble and the need to purchase items through intermediaries in the face of sanctions. Analysts suggest that the increase in raw material costs could affect drug prices in a few months.
For example, the price of seawater required to produce Snoop nasal spray and Linaqua nasal spray rose 101% to 97 rubles per kilogram. The price of dioxomethyltetrahydropyrimidine used in methyluracil ointments increased by 62% to 1.05 thousand rubles per kilogram. The price of the fraction used in the composition of the venotonic preparations Venarus and Detralex increased by 57%, and the price of the acid used in the hepatoprotector Ursosan increased by 44%. The price of lactulose required for the laxative Duphalac increased 38% year over year, according to RNC Pharma.
According to RNC Pharma estimates, about 80-85% of Russian medicines are produced from imported materials. According to DSM Group, in 2022, material imports to Russia increased by 50% physically and by 11% in monetary terms, reaching 25.3 million kilograms and 2.3 billion dollars, respectively.
RNC Pharmaceutical Development Director Nikolai Bespalov states that the cost of imported materials has started to rise after a 3.1% price reduction in 2022. Experts believe that a new decline in the ruble exchange rate in June-July could accelerate the rise in the prices of imports, but analysts do not expect “purely negative scenarios.”
Geropharm states that the cost of imported substances and materials used to manufacture the substances are also affected by the sanctions. The company explains that due to difficulties in finding new suppliers while maintaining quality, some components have to be purchased through intermediaries at 1.5-2 times higher prices.
