McDonald’s, fast food restaurant chains in many parts of India, has stopped adding tomatoes to their burgers. In this respect informs Reuters.
The publication says that this decision was taken simultaneously with the increase in vegetable prices in the country. The Delhi government attributed the increase in tomato prices to the unproductive season due to monsoon rains. Executives of the McDonald’s restaurant chain told the agency that the company’s decision was influenced by logistical issues, not pricing.
Connaught Plaza Restaurants, which operates around 150 outlets as McDonald’s franchises in north and east India, attributed the lack of tomatoes in their burgers to “temporary” seasonal issues. However, Westlife Foodworld, a McDonald’s franchisee with 357 restaurants in the western and southern parts of India, said there were “no serious issues with tomatoes”. According to the company, this affected 10-15% of the restaurants in the chain.
However, bags of ketchup are still sold at McDonald’s stores in Delhi, and a nearby Subway restaurant says there’s no problem serving tomatoes.
