Last year, Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) agencies reduced deforestation by 31%. In 2022, they prepared 1.27 million cubic meters. m.Indicator reached minimum value in last five years, informs red blood cell referring to the work of the forest accounting organization “Roslesinforg”.
It is noted that logging in the Federal Penitentiary Service remains at the level of large Russian timber enterprises. Last year, Federal Penitentiary Service institutions ranked 10th among all timber harvesters in Russia, and eighth in 2021.
Prisoners work at a logging plant in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Arkhangelsk and Irkutsk Regions. In the same regions, the main decrease in logging was noted: in the Krasnoyarsk Territory – 43% (333 thousand cubic meters), in the Arkhangelsk Territory – 35% (189 thousand cubic meters), in the Irkutsk Region – 23% (450 thousand cubic meters).
“Roslesinforg” cited two reasons for the drop in logging by Federal Prison Service agencies. According to them, this is due to the prisoners’ participation in a special military operation (SVO) and the change in reporting forms.

According to prosecutors, the international NPO threatens “the foundations of the constitutional order and security” of the Russian Federation. In addition, it is claimed that environmental activities are “actually accompanied by promoting a political position and undermining its economic foundations”. Greenpeace (an organization considered undesirable in the Russian Federation) has previously pointed to the possible adoption by the State Duma of a law allowing the felling of protected forests around Lake Baikal.
