According to a Japanese publication, Japan significantly reduced its purchase of coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia in April 2023. The Ministry of Finance trade statistics.

Compared to the same period of the previous year, Russian coal imports decreased by 80.8% and LNG – by 10.6%.

Tokyo continues to refuse to buy Russian oil, for which the G7 countries have set a ceiling price. The only exception is the oil supply from Sakhalin-2, which is connected with the LNG supply from this project.

As can be seen from the statistics, Japan not only reduced its LNG purchases from Russia, but also reduced the total import volume of this type of fuel by 18.7%. Coal imports also decreased by 1.6% and oil by 10% in April. At the same time, the cost of coal and LNG imported from Russia increased by 61.2% due to the increase in world energy prices.

Formerly Japan’s fiscal year 2022, which started on April 1, 2022 and ended on March 31, 2023, reduced Oil imports from Russia increased by 80.5 percent. In the same period, it decreased liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the Russian Federation by 6.2% and Russian coal imports by 55.2%.
