Moldovan farmers will protest if the authorities do not ban grain imports from Ukraine or provide them with financial assistance. This statement was made on Wednesday by the Moldovan association “Farm Power”. The document was posted on their Facebook page (its owner, Meta, was considered extremist and banned in Russia).
We hope that this warning is taken into account and urgent measures are taken to prevent the collapse of the agricultural sector. Otherwise, farmers promise protests from 7 people across the country.
The statement states that the majority of small and medium-sized farmers in Moldova are on the verge of bankruptcy. In 2022, drought, high inflation and rising loan interest rates hit them. At the same time, grain, corn and sunflower prices in Moldova fell by almost half.
Agriculturists are demanding compensation from the authorities and temporarily limiting grain imports from Ukraine. They want the government to compel the port of Giurgiulesti to export only Moldovan agricultural products and to pay last year’s subsidy debts.
On May 8, Moldovan farmers are already requested ban the import of grain from Ukraine within a week from the authorities.
On May 6, Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture Vladimir Bolya informed the Ukrainian leadership about plans to impose a temporary restriction on Ukrainian grain imports.
On April 28, the European Commission and five Eastern European countries agreed to limit exports of agricultural products from Ukraine to the EU. Agreement was reached with Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria.
