Germany plans to stabilize its energy supply by cooperating with Qatar on gas supply. This was expressed by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, transmits Reuters.
“The supply of liquefied natural gas from Qatar to Germany will help us diversify our energy resources in Germany… We want to stabilize the energy supply through relations with Qatar,” Baerbock said at a joint press conference with his Qatari counterpart in Doha.
Germany in November 2022 signed 15-year contract for liquefied natural gas imports from Qatar. Qatari oil and gas company Qatar Energy has signed a long-term agreement with Germany to supply 2 million tons of LNG annually from 2026. The long-term agreement was signed for 15 years. Saad bin Sharid al-Kaabi, also Emirati Minister of State for Energy, said that Qatar knows how to separate political issues from trade. In 2022, Qatar was actively negotiating with Germany on the start of LNG supply to the country.
According to the Financial Times, EU countries are increasingly turning to Qatar to diversify their energy supply and close the gap on the backdrop of Russia’s special operations in Ukraine. Last year, Doha provided a quarter of the EU’s LNG imports.
