Filipino environmentalists traveled to the UK to meet with representatives from Barclays, Standard Chartered and HSBC as part of a project to halt the construction of new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in and around the Verde Island Strait, a renowned global hotspot for marine biodiversity.

Whale sharks, corals, turtles and many fish live here. All of them are heavily impacted by the oil spill this year.

In February, the oil tanker Princess Empress sank off the east coast of Mindoro Island, spilling 800,000 liters of heavy industrial oil into the sea. The 75-mile slick devastated Mindoro’s fishing communities and left locals in need of medical attention.
