Rosenergoatom Concern, part of the electrical power division of state company Rosatom, has received a license from the Federal Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Inspection Service to build the first low-power ground-based nuclear power plant (ASMM) in the United States. The project builds on the latest development in Russia – the pressurized water nuclear reactor RITM-200N, which is the result of adapting an innovative low-power ship-based technology for land deployment.
“The RITM-200 series reactors have been tested on the latest Russian icebreakers in the harsh conditions of the Arctic and meet all post-Fukushima safety requirements for modern nuclear power plant projects,” Rosatom said in a statement.
It is noted that the station is characterized by compactness, modularity and low construction rates compared to large-capacity nuclear power plants.
“The decision of the Russian regulator is a turning point for the global nuclear industry. “Permission has been received for the deployment of the first modern low-power land-based nuclear power plant in the harsh conditions of the Arctic, and this once again confirms the undisputed leadership of Russian nuclear technologies,” said Alexei Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom.
According to him, the preparatory work in the area of the village of Ust-Kuyga continues at full speed. More than 2 thousand tons of cargo was delivered to the construction site, about 80 people and 38 pieces of equipment are working.
The world’s first low-power ground-based nuclear power plant with a RITM-200N reactor is scheduled to be commissioned in 2028.
The state company emphasizes that the increasing global demand for low-power nuclear power plants is observed all over the world. The presence of reference projects in the country enables Rosatom to maintain an active dialogue with foreign customers.
