RBC: Monopoly board games begin to end in Russian toy stores

There is a shortage of the popular board game Monopoly in Russian hobby and entertainment stores. In particular, it is not sold in Mosigra chain stores and Hobby Games retail outlets (owned by Hobby World, which has positioned itself as the largest publisher of board games in Russia). The board game “Monopoly” was invented in 1935 by inventor Charles Darrow from the USA. According to the American portal Fun, this game ranks third in the ranking of the best-selling games in the world, after checkers and chess.

The RBC reporter, who introduced himself as the buyer, was told that the game has not been delivered at Mosigra stores since the New Year’s, and that the rights belong to Hasbro. He is known for My Little Pony toys and toys based on Star Wars and Power Rangers. Following the start of Russian special operations in Ukraine, Hasbro suspended its activities in the Russian Federation. At the time of RBC’s request, the Intellect-Toy store did not have Monopoly. They explained that they had ordered for it but the delivery time was unknown. In “Children’s World” they said they are selling their stock of the game from 2022.

Representatives of Mosigra, Hobby Games and Hobby World did not respond to RBC’s official requests.

In mid-March this year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade included the toys in the parallel import list. It also includes Hasbro products. Experts interviewed by RBC noted that there has been an increase in Russia’s demand for games since last year.
