In Estonia, the number of thefts in the January-March 2023 period increased by 15% compared to the same period last year. This situation occurred due to a sharp deterioration in the economic situation of the population. In this respect informs Postimees refers to data from security company Viking Security.
The security company noted that the events touched upon the challenges people face to make ends meet and the growing black market.
The boom in theft, usually recorded at Christmas, is not over this year, according to participants in the security market. In other words, there were large-scale theft attempts from January to March. At the same time, thieves mostly tried to remove everyday items such as socks, vests, tights or diapers from the store.
The publication noted that the savings of the population began to run out. This has led people to buy and search for cheaper goods. In response, the black market and professional thieves have become more active and are trying to buy more and more everyday goods from stores in order to resell them at a lower price. Therefore, considering that people’s savings are depleted, the number of thefts does not decrease.
