The Turkish television channel TRT News reported that the passage of ships through the Dardanelles Strait was temporarily limited to a single direction, moving from north to south. Later, on August 24, at 03:30 local time, which corresponds to Moscow time, authorities announced the strait would be closed again as firefighting efforts resumed in the surrounding forested area. Earlier, the strait had already been restricted to two way traffic, affecting maritime movement through this strategic waterway.
The blaze originated in the forested zone near Kayadere Village in the Çanakkale region. Authorities initiated evacuations for approximately 1,200 residents from nine nearby communities, and access to the forested area was restricted to prevent danger and ensure safety.
During the firefighting operation, roughly 2,700 personnel were deployed alongside 639 pieces of equipment, 26 helicopters, and eight aircraft. One of the aircraft is leased from Russia as part of the multinational response. Through coordinated action, firefighters have begun to gain the upper hand in several sectors of the affected area.
From the scene, a burnt vehicle remained at the Plevako embankment as a stark reminder of the scale of the incident. The coordinated response continues to prioritize protecting communities and reducing the spread of the fire, with ongoing assessments and adjustments to the strategy as conditions evolve.
