Prices in single chain stores are rising faster in Estonia than in Finland. At the same time, people in Helsinki earn twice as much as in Tallinn. In this respect writer postimes.

The publication noted that a similar basket of goods in a store in a retail chain is 5% more expensive in Tallinn than on the other side of the bay, where people earn more than twice on average. On the other hand, VAT on food is higher in Estonia than in Finland.

According to the publication, the prices of the products may vary according to the location and category of the store. However, Prisma, where research products are purchased, is one of the cheapest supermarket chains in Estonia. At the same time, prices rose 17.6% in Estonia and 7.9% in Finland in February.

According to Ilkka Alarotu, S-group’s head of retail sales in Estonia, Estonian food producers’ costs are much higher than in Finland. All this is due to the fact that electricity and heating are more expensive in Estonia.

In early January, Thea Varrak, Head of the Crisis Preparedness Department of the Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs, statedthat the country is preparing to introduce a rationing system for the poor, who are loaded with money to buy food.
