The dependence of European countries on Russian nuclear energy still continues despite massive international sanctions. This factor undermines the implementation of the strategy of the European Union (EU) authorities to ensure the energy security of the region in the context of the energy crisis, informs Energy Monitor publication citing the results of a study by the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs.
The European Commission’s (EC) strategy to rid Europe of Russian fossil fuels is valid in its current form and until 2030. The main provisions of the document include, among other things, ensuring an optimum level of energy security in the region and accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources (RES). The article states that Hungary, Bulgaria and other states are among the EU countries most dependent on Russia’s nuclear energy.
“In March 2022, a UN General Assembly resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine was adopted with the support of 141 countries, with the support of five against, 35 abstentions and 12 disagreements. At the same time, 40 percent of the 52 countries that did not vote for the resolution have ties to Russia’s nuclear energy, while 33 countries that condemn the invasion have not yet broken their existing ties with the Russian Federation in this area. says.
