At the beginning of 2023, losses of Russian shipyards from the construction of fishing vessels reached 42 billion rubles. Such damage can partly be explained by the crisis coronavirus period, but to a greater extent this was due to the lack of necessary qualifications at the shipyards in the first phase of the construction program, opens The words of Ilya Shestakov, head of the Federal Fisheries Agency, RBC.

The large-scale construction program of fishing and crab vessels began in Russia in 2018. However, five years after the start of the investment project, the shipyards could not fulfill the planned plan. Shestakov announced that they had sold only 14 of the 105 ships required until this month.

“There are serious problems in the construction of the fishing fleet. They started even before the sanctions, and to some extent they can be justified by the coronavirus pandemic. However, the difficulties were mostly due to the lack of necessary competencies in the shipyards in the first phase of the program.”

According to Shestakov, the remaining 37 crab fishing vessels will be built over the next five years – including 2027. However, the project implementation process is hampered by “misidentified” contractual obligations between shipbuilders and fishermen.
