Following a closed cabinet meeting at Meseberg Castle, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck urged that Germany stockpile enough gas during the summer months to shield households and industry from the risk of higher prices later in the year. The comment came as part of a broader push to secure energy resilience in a volatile market, and it was reported by Reuters.
Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at a joint press conference about Europe’s energy security. She highlighted efforts to cut dependence on gas and oil from Russia, noting a dramatic shift in supply relations. In the eight months prior, Russia reduced gas exports to Europe by roughly 80 percent, a drop that stressed European energy systems. Von der Leyen credited coordinated action across member states, and the support of the United States and Norway, for helping to stabilize supplies through liquefied natural gas and pipeline gas, respectively.
In a separate interview with CNN, Chancellor Scholz stated that Germany had taken steps to reduce its reliance on Russian gas, oil, and coal. He emphasized that the country had moved toward greater energy independence and diversified its sources as part of a long-term strategy to insulate the economy from political risk and market volatility. The exchange underscored a shared European objective: to strengthen resilience while maintaining reliable energy access for homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure across the continent.
