Unique Soviet bus: it went like hot cakes

A four-wheel drive bus is a gift for off-road. All the more interesting is the fact that in 1966 the PAZ-672 4 × 4 model (since 1968 – PAZ-3201) was born with two drive shafts and a two-stage transfer case, as on the GAZ-66 shishig.

The bus came into the series for almost six years, but still got it – that’s why it’s four-wheel drive! Engine – 8-cylinder ZMZ with a volume of 4.25 liters and a power of 115 horsepower.

The bus immediately became scarce: various departments needed such transport. And the funny thing is that such a “groove” had practically no serial analogues in the world!

The four-wheel drive PAZ-3201 is a rather rare sight in the world of buses.

Until 1988, when the next PAZ-3206 model went into production, 13,873 four-wheel drive PAZ-3201s were produced. In the USSR, four-wheel drive “grooves”, which were used mainly as departmental, were in short supply.

Mikhail Kolodochkin has been collecting unusual facts from the history of technology for many years. Did you know, for example, that the predecessor of that same “shishiga” was an eight-wheeled all-terrain vehicle?
