When choosing a car battery, you need to buy the heaviest one. stated Mikhail Kolodochkin, auto expert of the magazine “Behind the Wheel”.
“Never buy batteries with attractive price tags. This indicates that the seller ordered a batch of batteries from some business that look like branded batteries, but are almost “empty” inside. Roughly speaking, such batteries do not contain enough lead. It is easy to identify such batteries by weighing: check the weight of several batteries and buy the heaviest one,” the expert said.
According to the expert, when buying a battery, it is necessary to look at the country of production. Some imported batteries now come to Russia without labels, and sellers sell them on their own, depending on demand. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to domestic brands.
On European cars the battery is secured by a clamping bar with a protrusion on the body. For Asians the bar runs along the upper plane of the battery. Two studs are attached to it.
The battery capacity in ampere hours should not be less than that recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Also, when purchasing a battery, you should learn its dimensions to understand whether it will fit in your vehicle’s standard location.
If you need to install a battery in the car immediately after purchase, you need to move away from traffic jams on the highway so that the battery can recharge.
It happened before that knownThe main cause of battery explosion is overload, when the generator produces increased current. This causes gas to be released inside the battery, which can ignite. In addition to the explosion, this can also damage other electronic components of the vehicle, which are very sensitive to voltage changes.
The expert also said that the battery case could be damaged as a result of a manufacturing defect (hidden crack) or due to deep disassembly in winter, when the electrolyte froze and burst the case.
The electrolyte of a car battery consists of about 35% sulfuric acid. This substance is extremely aggressive and can cause burns on contact with skin and even poisoning if its vapors are inhaled. It also easily deteriorates many materials: it burns any fabric, paint and other coatings.
