Incorrectly selected power steering fluid can cause a malfunction. Sergei Ponomarev, technical instructor of the international network of car service centers Fit Service, told this to a socialbites.ca correspondent. According to him, not only motorists, but also service station specialists sometimes make mistakes, choosing a fluid only by color or pouring a universal composition into the tank.
“Power steering fluid consists of a base and additives. Three types of bases are used: mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic. For example, a synthetic base is aggressive towards rubber parts that are not designed for it. Seals and hoses under the influence of such a base begin to deteriorate, which in the future leads to leaks, thickening of the fluid and then to complete failure of the power steering,” Ponomarev said.
In his opinion, it is definitely not worth approaching the choice of liquid only by color, as it can be mineral or synthetic and have completely unsuitable viscosity and temperature characteristics.
When choosing power steering fluid, you need to take into account the tolerances of the vehicle manufacturer. It is also important that the fluid has a stable viscosity and protects parts from corrosion. The next important feature is that it does not foam. The expert emphasized that only if these rules are followed will the operation of the car be long and safe.
