Some drivers forget to change the fuel filter in their cars, which can cause engine damage. Pavel Konstantinov, director of the Lux mechanical repair department of the Avilon automobile group, told socialbites.ca. However, there are many signs that indicate that the filter is faulty and needs to be replaced.
“Among the main signs of a clogged or faulty fuel filter, it is worth mentioning, first of all, difficulties with starting, stalling, as well as unstable operation of the engine as a whole. If the filter becomes clogged, insufficient fuel will flow into the engine,” Konstantinov said.
Secondly, on the same background, power loss may occur and the vehicle’s performance may decrease. The expert noted that the third sign of a faulty filter is overheating of the fuel pump and, as a result, its premature failure.
Fuel filter replacement interval depends on the type of vehicle and the quality of the fuel. On average, most automakers recommend changing the fuel filter every 30-50 thousand km. However, the expert explained that some models, especially diesel models, may need to be replaced more often – for example, every 15-20 thousand km.
