Most car seat fillers contain a fire retardant chemical that is a potential carcinogen and spreads throughout the vehicle, especially in hot weather. It is reported in this study, published In the journal Environmental Science and Technology.
During the research, American scientists analyzed the air composition of 101 cars produced in 30 states from 2015 to 2022. Gasoline, electric and hybrid cars were used in the research.
Researchers found the fire retardant TCPP, now investigated by the US National Toxicology Program as a potential carcinogen, in 99% of the vehicles. Other flame retardants, TDCIPP and TCEP, which are considered carcinogenic, were also found in most of the cars examined.
“Given that the average driver spends about an hour in the car each day, this is a serious public health issue,” said Rebecca Hoehn, a principal investigator and toxicology scientist at Duke University who co-authored the paper.
Scientists have determined that car seat padding is a source of carcinogenic compounds and recommend parking in the shade and opening car windows to reduce toxic exposure.
