86 years of road safety

July 3 is the foundation day of the traffic police. On this day in 1936, the Union of People’s Commissars approved the “Regulations for the State Automobile Inspectorate of the Main Directorate of the Workers and Peasants’ Militia of the NKVD of the USSR”. This is how the first 7 departments of the State Automobile Inspectorate appeared, in which there were only 57 employees. Today, more than 83 thousand people work in the traffic police, 57.5 of which are inspectors traffic police officers.

As a result of their work over the past 10 years, Russian roads have become safer. For example, people are half as likely to die in accidents. And the number of fatal accidents continues to fall. For example, since the beginning of the year (January-May), the number of casualties has fallen by 8.2% (compared to the same period in 2021) to 41.9 thousand, and the number of fatalities by 3.1% (4467 people ), as well as victims (53,101 people, which is 8.5% less than a year earlier). Pedestrians started falling under their wheels by 8.1%. These indicators are not ideal, but the trend is clear – to improve.
